43-year-old ID’d as woman found slain on Birmingham dead-end street

Authorities have released the name of a woman found slain on a Birmingham dead-end street.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Genise Carter. She was 43 and lived in Birmingham.

The discovery was made at 8:21 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, in the 1300 block of 18th Street North.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said a city worker found the woman unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced her dead on the scene at 9:24 a.m.

Detectives did not initially see any obvious signs of foul play. However, the body was taken to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office where an autopsy showed she had been shot.

Carter is Birmingham’s sixth homicide this year. In all of Jefferson County, there have been eight homicides including the six in Birmingham.

No arrests have been announced.
